Special features of the Manuscript of
Hirz Imam Jawad (a.s.)

This manuscript is in a scroll format, measuring 6 meters and 97 centimeters in length and 7 centimeters in width. They wrote it on deer skin with delicate and artistic craftsmanship.

The manuscript dates back to the 12th century AH, and in the year 1373 AH (solar calendar), Abbas Sheikhi Narani (عباس شیخی نارانی) endowed it to the sacred shrine of Imam Reza.

The artisans inscribed the manuscript on one side of a very delicate and transparent skin, with the colors visible from the other side.

One of the most significant features of this hirz (amulet) is that it contains the entire Quran, inscribed in a beautiful and readable script. The designers used a special style, employing two colors: black and red.

This valuable scroll contains a delicate golden header, designed as an inscription at the beginning of the amulet, with the phrase “This is the Amulet of Imam Jawad (a.s.)” written in Thuluth script and cinnabar (red ink).

The Remarkable Narrative of Sayyid
Ibn Tawus

Sayyid Ibn Tawus narrates:

It is reported that Harun always carried this charm with him and fought in wars with its blessing. He never parted from it and won every battle.

The Story of Imam Reza’s Journey

During the journey of Imam Reza (a.s.), when he stayed at the house of Hamid ibn Qahtaba, he took off his garment and gave it to Hamid. Hamid then handed it to a maidservant to wash.

After a while, the maid returned and gave a piece of paper to Hamid, saying that she had found it in Imam Reza’s pocket.

Hamid then showed the paper to the Imam and asked what it contained. The Imam replied, “This is something we do not separate from ourselves.”

Hamid asked the Imam to teach him the content of this hirz (amulet). The Imam initially said:

“This amulet is a shield against Satan and oppressive rulers. Whoever keeps it in their pocket will be under divine protection.”

Then, the Imam dictated the text of the hirz to him:

“In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

In the name of Allah, I seek refuge with You, O Most Merciful. whether you are pious or impious. Whether the one approaching me is pious or not, I place my trust in God, the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing, against your hearing and sight.

You have no authority over me, nor over my hearing, nor over my sight, nor over my hair, nor over my skin, nor over my flesh, nor over my blood, nor over my brain, nor over my nerves, nor over my bones, nor over my family, nor over my wealth, nor over what my Lord has provided for me.

My Lord has placed a veil of prophethood between you and me, the veil with which the prophets of Allah protected themselves from dominion of the pharaohs (and the tyranny of the oppressors).

Gabriel is on my right, Michael is on my left, Israfil is behind me, and Muhammad (S) is in front of me. And Allah is aware of what prevents you and what prevents Satan from [affecting me]. O Allah, his ignorance will not prevail over Your patience, nor will it disturb my peace or lead him to belittle me. O Allah, I seek refuge in You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You.”

The Strange Tale of Abul-Salt al-Hirawi

The strange tale of this amulet was narrated by Abul-Salt al-Hirawi. He said, “My master is Ali ibn Musa al-Ridha (a.s.).”

One day, while I was sitting, the messenger from Ma’mun entered, approached the Imam and said, “The Emir (Ma’mun) is requesting your presence.” Afterward, the messenger then stood up and informed me that I was not requested.

[The Imam said,] “Ma’mun has summoned me this time for a serious matter. However, by God, he cannot harm me because of the words that have been passed down to me from my grandfather, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).”

Abul-Salt continued, “I went out with the Imam (a.s.) to see Ma’mun. As soon as the Imam’s gaze fell upon Ma’mun, he recited this hirz (amulet) until the end. When the Imam stood before Ma’mun, Ma’mun looked at him and said:

“O Abu al-Hasan, I have been commanded to give you 100,000 dirhams. In addition, write down any other request you may have.”

Yet, why did the Imam turn his back on Ma’mun? Then, Ma’mun looked at the back of the Imam and said, ‘I have willed, and Allah has willed, and what Allah has willed is better.’ Thus, this was the secret of the amulet and the Imam’s protection from the oppression of tyrants.

One day, Imam Reza (a.s.) mentioned a note that his mother regularly wrote down for him. Imam Reza (a.s.) said: ‘The Ruq’ah al-Jib (pocket amulet) is a protection against all evil.'”
