Allameh Majlesi (may God have mercy on him) said at the beginning of the 19th hadith of the “Book of Dhikr (Zikr) and Dua” from the 38th part of “Chapter of Marriage of the Prophet and his Spouses Al-Tahirat” in the book Bihar al-Anwar, which is related to the amulet (hirz) of Abu Dujana, he said:
“Among the famous amulets that have been narrated from the Prophet (s.a.w), there is an amulet known as the Amulet of Abu Dujana for warding off jinn and witchcraft, which I’ve seen in some books.”
The Story of Abu Dujana Amulet
The history and the story behind the amulet of Abu Dujana is as follows:
Abu Dujana (may God have mercy on him) narrates that he complained to the Prophet and said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of God! I left home at night when suddenly a night crawler came towards me and reached me, then I touched its skin and it was the skin of a hedgehog.
Then the Prophet turned to Amir al-Mu’minin Ali (a.s.) and said: Write down for Abu Dujana Ansari and everyone from my community after him who is afraid of jinn!
Ali (a.s) said: What should I write, O Messenger of God?
And the Prophet replied: write, O Ali; And he dictates the amulet.
The Text of Abu Dujana Amulet
The beginning part of Abu Dujana amulet is as follows:
بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم الحمد لله الذی خلق السماوات و الارض و جعل الظلمات و النور ثم الذین کفروا بربهم یعدلون هذا کتاب من محمد رسول الله العربی الهاشمی المکی المدنی الابطحی الامی صاحب التاج و الهراوة و القضیب و الناقة صاحب قول لا اله الا الله الی من طرق الدار الا طارقا یطرق بخیر اما بعد فان لنا و لکم فی الحق سعة فان لم یکن طارقا مولعا او داعیا مبطلا او مؤذیا مقتصما فاترکوا حملة القرآن و
The Effect of The Amulet for Abu Dujana
After writing of the amulet, it was given to Abu Dujana Ansari.
He put the amulet in the middle of the house. So the creature said to Abu Dujana: I swear to the one who revealed the verse «قم فأنذر» to Muhammad (s.a.w.), you have burned us. The next morning, Abu Dujana came to the Prophet and told him the story. So the Prophet said: Take the amulet and put it in a box. So if the creature returns, put the amulet in the house.
After these events, Abu Dujana said: I swear to God, I did not see any fear for my family and child, and that creature did not return, and the Prophet died, and there was no need to complain again.
Another Narration
Another hadith also has been narrated in book Bihār al-Anwār, referring to books Hayāt al-Hayawān and Dalail al-Nabuwah:
Abu Dujana said: I complained to the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) that when I was sleeping, I heard a sound like the sound of millstone and a buzz like the buzz of a bee, and I saw a light like a lightning, and when I raised my head, I saw blackness. It goes up and its length is the size of my room. When I touched its skin, it is like the skin of a hedgehog. And it throws somethings like sparks of fire to my face.
The Prophet said: This is the jinn of your house.
Then asked for ink and paper and told Ali (peace be upon him) to write.
Abu Dujana said: I got the letter, folded it, took it home and put it under my head. I slept peacefully that night and did not understand anything.
Until I woke up from the cry of someone who said: O Abu Dujana! You set us on fire with this text. Please take this text away from us. We will never come back to your house or near you and where this text is.
Abu Dujana said: I would not until I get permission from the Messenger of God (s.a.w).
He said: The night was long because of hearing the cries of the jinn.
The Messenger of God (s.a.w) said: O Abu Dujana, leave them alone. Swear to the one who truly sent me as a prophet, they will feel the pain of punishment until the Day of Resurrection.
