What is the meaning of the “Moon in Scorpio”?

In this article, we try to explain, in a simple language, the astrological concept of the “Moon in Scorpio” for the followers of “Razavi Group”.

When we speak of the term the “Moon in Scorpio”, there are two situations:

  • The Moon in Scorpio zodiac
  • The Moon in Scorpio constellation

What does each of those phrases mean? To fully understand it, it is necessary to get familiar with some key concepts as follows:

Ecliptic

The ecliptic is the path and the orbit along which the sun seems to move during a year if we observe it from the earth. In ancient Islamic astrology the ecliptic is called Dāyirat al-Burūj (in Arabic: دائرة البُروج) which means the circle of buruj.

Zodiac

The zodiac is an imaginary belt and area around either side of the ecliptic.

Ancient astrology scientists divided the 360° into 12 equal parts each considered to occupy 1/12 or 30°. in order to name each segment, they use the name of the astronomical constellation which exactly correspond each part.

At that time, the name of a certain constellation was used to name each of those zodiac segments accordingly.

In Islamic astrology the zodiac is called Mantaqat al-Burūj (in Arabic: مَنطَقَة البُرُوج) which means the area of buruj and each segment is called a burj (in Arabic: بُرج).

Constellation

A constellation is a collection of stars seen as forming a certain pattern in the sky when we observe them from the earth. They are named after that imaginary shape and pattern.

The usages of constellations

Since long ago, the constellations were used for identifying various parts of the sky, for astronomical calculations, naval purposes, locating one’s position, orientation, navigation and the like.

The names of the zodiac segment and signs

The names of the twelve zodiac segments and signs are as follows:

1 Aries حَمَل (ḥamal)
2 Taurus ثَور (thawr)
3   Gemini جَوزا (Jawzā)
4 Cancer سَرَطان (saraṭān) ♋️
5 Leo اَسَد (asad)
6 Virgo سُنبُلَة (sunbulah)
7 Libra میزان (mīzān)
8 Scorpio عَقرَب (aqrab)
9 Sagittarius قَوس (qaws)
10 Capricorn جَدي (jady)
11 Aquarius دَلو (dalw)
12 Pisces حُوت (ḥūt)

The motion of the moon (qamar:قَمَر)

From an observer’s eyes on the earth, the moon – just like the Sun – orbits the earth. However, the duration of each rotation of the moon around the earth lasts about 30 days. If we consider the ecliptic and the zodiac, we may say in which part of the sky, or in which zodiac segment, is the moon in each moment of its motion.

Thus, for example, one may say “the moon is in the Cancer”; that is, the moon is in an area of the sky where we see the Cancer constellation.

Is a zodiac segment different from a constellation?

Yes.

From the conceptual viewpoint, the constellation, as meaning a collection of stars, is different from a zodiac segment, which is a part of the zodiac. But is there any difference between saying that ‘the moon is in the Pisces zodiac’ and saying that ‘the moon is in the Pisces constellation’?

Both yes and no!

When the ancient astronomers used this method for naming the zodiac signs, each zodiac segment was precisely in the area specified for a certain constellation. That is, the zodiac segment and the constellation were precisely coincident.

Therefore, in that time, there was no difference between the zodiac segment and constellation as far as the place of celestial bodies was concerned.

After years, however, it turned out that the coincidence of zodiac segment and constellations disappears over time and a little difference emerges between them. Today, it is clear that it lasts about 26000 years for the coincidence of the zodiac and constellation to occur again.

In our time, for instance, the entrance of the moon into the Scorpio constellation occurs about two days and a half after its entrance into the Scorpio zodiac.

Is the zodiac a criterion or the constellation?

Considering the abovementioned facts, it is stated in the Islamic traditions that one must observe some laws for the ‘Moon in Scorpio’; Now the question is whether we must observe the laws for the position of the moon in Scorpio zodiac or its position in Scorpio constellation.

To answer this question, there is disagreements among the researchers, and three views have been proposed in this regard as follows:

  1. The moon in Scorpio means the position of the moon in Scorpio zodiac.
  2. The moon in Scorpio means the position of the moon in the area of the Scorpio constellation.
  3. Observing both meaning is considered. That is, one must consider the case from the entrance of the moon into the Scorpio zodiac up to its exit from the Scorpio constellation.

Some premier scholars of the Islamic sciences in our age have adopted the third view, but they have regarded the second view – i.e. the moon in the Scorpio constellation – as the authentic one.

How long does the ‘moon in Scorpio’ last?

In our time and based on the first or second views, it lasts about 2 or 3 days. But if we want to be cautious i.e. based on the third view, it will last for about 4 days and a half.

Observing the astronomical conditions in traditions

Is there anything in transmitted traditions and ahadith regarding observance of various astronomical states and making decisions accordingly?

There are numerous traditions preventing the believers from linking their actions to astronomical information and regarding their fate as dependent on the movements of celestial bodies.[1] In the authentic sources of traditions, however, there are hadiths that encourage the believers to observe some of the astronomical states.

To reconcile these two groups of hadiths, it is advisable to observe those laws that the Infallibles have advised us to observe, not involving ourselves in astronomical data more, for according to the Prophet’s Household, it is possible for us to be involved in and led to prophecy, sorcery, infidelity and hellfire.

What items are to be observed in traditions?

Observing the items related to the “moon in Scorpio” and the days of initiation, middle and end of any lunar month as well as some certain days of the week suitable for actions such as marriage, fasting, travelling, saying certain prayers, etc. are among items referred to in traditions. For more information in this regard, you may refer to books such as Mafātīḥ al-Jinān, Ḥilyat al-Muttaqīn, and some other books as well as the traditions pertaining to Islamic lifestyle.

What must not be done in times of the ‘moon in Scorpio’?

In numerous traditions, it has been stated that:

مَن سافَرَ أو تَزَوَّجَ والقَمَر في العَقرَب لم یَرَی الحُسنَی

Anyone who travels or marries in times of the ‘moon in Scorpio’ will be afflicted with problems.[2]

However, since in other traditions some certain times have been mentioned as saꜥd (good) and naḥs (evil) times, and since we have been advised to do some actions and refrain from doing some others, we may say that in days of the ‘moon in Scorpio’, we must avoid doing important tasks, and wait until the moon exits from Scorpio.

If we have to do an important action in times of the ‘moon in Scorpio’, what must we do?

The same thing has been mentioned in traditions and the Infallibles have advised us to pay alms and recite āyat al-kursī for removal of evil in those days.[3]

In general, if we want to do an important task in those days, we may remove the evil effects by paying alms, reciting āyat al-kursī, reciting muꜥawadhatayn (i.e. Surahs nās and falaq of the Quran), having authentic amulets with ourselves and saying prayers before starting that task, and by starting it with Allah’s name and trusting in Him.

One of the most beneficial and mostly advised amulets that rejects and removes evils and afflictions is Imam Jawad’s major amulet. This amulet has been prepared by Razavi Group according to the instructions stated in authentic Islamic traditions.

Imam Jawad’s amulet and the ‘moon in Scorpio’

In traditions related to Imam Jawad’s amulet, we see the following instructions about observing the laws of the ‘moon in Scorpio’:

فَإِذَا أَرَادَ شَدَّهُ … وَ لْيَتَوَضَّأْ … وَ لْيُصَلِّ … فَإِذَا فَرَغَ مِنْهَا فَلْيَشُدَّهُ عَلَى عَضُدِهِ الْأَيْمَنِ … وَ يَنْبَغِي أَنْ لاَ يَكُونَ طُلُوعُ الْقَمَرِ فِي بُرْجِ الْعَقْرَبِ

Thus, when someone wants to wear the amulet, he must perform ablution and say a prayer; then, after being finished, he must wear the amulet on his right arm; and it is advisable to be sure the moon is not in the Scorpio.[4]

In the text of the abovementioned traditions, we see that it is advisable to be sure the moon in not in Scorpio for saying the related prayer and wearing the amulet for the first time.

As mentioned above, what has been stated for observing the ‘moon in Scorpio’ is not related to its writing. However, Razavi Group regards observing the days of the ‘moon in Scorpio’ as one of its task and does not write down the amulets in those days.

Besides, Razavi Group pays alms on the part of those who hold the amulets and does charity works.
