In this article, we aim to explore the Hirz of the Fourteen Infallibles and examine it from various perspectives. Today, people face numerous difficulties in their life in which they don’t know what causes it. Obstacles arise in work, livelihood, and other areas of life that can lead to despair, even though outwardly everything may seem fine. The main reason for most of these difficulties is often attributed to demons and supernatural issues, as today, demonic forces are more active than during the time of Prophet Solomon. They intend on creating obstacles in the lives of people, especially the believers and those devoted to God.
The only solution to these types of problems is to seek the guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.) and follow their teachings.
The Fourteen Infallibles (a.s.) each had a hirz (amulet) and it is recommended for others to have a hirz too.
It is recommended to use hirz as a protection against supernatural issues, sorcery, and curses. When we look into the history and practices of the Imams (a.s.), we find that they used amulets. Therefore, we are certain that keeping and using hirz or amulet was a an established tradition.
Moreover, they taught their followers how to inscribe and prepare amulets; they also encouraged them to keep one with them. This shows the value and importance of hirz or amulets among the Imams (a.s.).
Many scholars have authored books on amulets and talismans that was derived from the sayings of the Infallibles (a.s.). The Amulet of the Fourteen Infallibles is regarded as the most comprehensive, complete, and powerful amulet, as it includes the amulets of all fourteen Infallibles (a.s.). The prayers (duas) that are collected in this hirz are among the most authentic ones.

Exploring the Sources and Texts of the Hirz of the Fourteen Infallibles (a.s.)
Here is the original text of one of the protective prayers of the Fourteen Infallibles (a.s.).
لا إله إلا أنت، عليك توكلت وأنت رب العرش العظیم، ما شاء الله كان وما لم يشأ لم يكن، لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله العلي العظيم، أعلم أن الله على كل شيء قدير، وأن الله قد أحاط بكل شيء علمًا، اللهم! إني أعوذ بك من شر نفسي، ومن شر كل دابة أنت آخذ بناصيتها، إن ربي على صراط مستقيم.
“There is no god but You; in You, I place my trust, and You are the Lord of the Glorious Throne. What God wills happens, and what He does not will does not happen. There is no power or strength except through God, the Exalted, the Great. I know that God is capable of all things and that He encompasses all knowledge. O God! I seek refuge with You from the evil of my soul and from the evil of every creature, for You are the one who holds its reins. Truly, my Lord is on a straight path.”
Source: This hirz (prayer) was recorded by Shaykh Abbas Qummi in Mafatih al-Jinan and previously by Allamah Majlisi in Bihar al-Anwar.
The oldest source is Muhaj al-Da’awat by Sayyid Ibn Tawus. Versions of this prayer are also found in Sunni and Shia traditions. The significant feature of this hirz is that most of its phrases are based on Quranic verses.

بسْمِ اللّهِ وَبِاللّهِ وَماشاءَ اللّهِ. بِسْمِ اللّهِ لاحَوْلَ وَلاقُوَّةِ اِلاّ بِاللّهِ. قالَ مُوسى: ما جِئْتُمْ بِهِ السِّحْرَ، اِنَّ اللّهَ سَيُبْطِلُهُ اِنَّ اللّهِ لايُصْلِحُ عَمَلَ الْمُفْسِدينَ. فَوَقَعَ الْحَقُ وَبَطَلَ ماكانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ. فَغْلِبُوا هُنالِكَ وَانْقَلَبُوا صاغِرينَ.
“In the name of God and with God’s help, and what God wills. In the name of God, there is no power and strength except through God. Moses said: ‘What you have brought were magic and sorcery. Indeed, God will make it ineffective. God does not amend the work of the corrupt.’ Thus, truth prevailed, and their deeds became futile. They were defeated there and turned back in disgrace.”
Source: This hirz (prayer) was reliably transmitted from Imam Ali (a.s.). It was recorded by Shaykh Abbas Qummi in Mafatih al-Jinan and Allamah Majlisi in Hilyat al-Muttaqin. Its significant feature is that most of it consists of Quranic verses.
Here is the original text of one of the protective prayers of the Fourteen Infallibles (a.s.).
یا حَىُّ یا قَیومُ. بِرَحْمَتِک اَسْتَغیثُ، فَاَغِثْنى وَلا تَکلْنى اِلى نَفْسى طَرْفَةَ عَینِ اَبَداً، وَ اَصْلِحْ لى شَاْنى کلَّه.
“O Ever-Living, O Sustainer, I seek aid through Your mercy, so help me, and do not leave me to myself even for a moment. Set all my affairs right.”
Source: Allamah Majlisi has narrated it in Bihar al-Anwar from the book Misbah al-Anwar. Sayyid Ibn Tawus also included this prayer in both his book Iqbal and the well-known Muhaj al-Da’awat. Additionally, Shaykh Kulayni narrated it from Imam Sadiq (a.s.) in al-Kafi. Although the text in Bihar al -Anwar differs slightly from the version mentioned above.
Imam Sadiq (a.s.) said about this prayer: “This prayer has been in the morning and evening supplication of all the prophets.”

اَللّهُمَّ اِنّى اَسأَلُکَ بِکَلِماتِکَ وَ مَعاقِدَ عَرشِکَ وَ سُکّانِ سَماواتِکَ وَ اَرضِکَ وَ اَنبیائِکَ وَ رُسُلِکَ، أَنْ تَستَجیبَ لى، فَقَدْ رَهِقَنى مِنْ أَمرى عُسراً ، فَأَسألُکَ اَنْ تُصَلِّىَ عَلى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ الِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ اَنْ تَجْعَلَ لى مِن عُسرى یُسراً.
“O God! I ask You by Your words, the positions of Your Throne, the inhabitants of Your heavens and earth, and Your prophets and messengers, to respond to me. Hardship has overtaken me. I ask You to bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and to turn my hardship into ease.”
Source: This prayer was mentioned by Kaf’ami in al-Misbah. Shaykh Saduq also narrated it within a long narration in both his books Uyun Akhbar al-Ridha (AS) and Kamal al-Din. Most importantly, Sayyid Ibn Tawus included it under the amulets of “Hirz of Imam Hasan (AS)” in Muhaj al-Da’awat.

یا دَیمومُ، یا حَی یا قَیومُ قَیوم الرَّحمنُ الرَّحیمُ، یا کاشِفَ الغَمِّ، یا فارِجَ الهَمِّ، یا باعِثَ الرُّسُلِ، یا صادِقَ الوَعدِ، اللّهُمَّ إن کانَ لی عِندَک رِضوانٌ ووُدٌّ فَاغفِر لی ومَنِ اتَّبَعَنی مِن إخوانی وشیعَتی. وطَیب ما فی صُلبی، بِرَحمَتِک یا أرحَمَ الرّاحِمینَ، وصَلَّی اللّهُ عَلی سَیدِنا مُحَمَّدٍ وآلِهِ أجمَعینَ.
“O Eternal, O Living, O Sustainer, Sustainer of the Merciful, the Compassionate, O Remover of Distress, O Reliever of Worry, O Sender of Messengers, O True in Promise.
O Allah! If You wish for my contentment and affection, then forgive me and those who follow me from among my brothers and my companions, and purify and improve what is in my soul. By Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful, and may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon our leader Muhammad and his family.”

Sheikh Saduq recorded this amulet in Uyun Akhbar al-Ridha (AS) and Kamal al-Din. Sheikh Tabarsi also included it in A’lam al-Wara, and Rawandi mentioned it in Qasas al-Anbiya. Sayyid Ibn Tawus provided the complete text of this amulet in Muhaj al-Da’awat, and Kaf’ami also recorded it in Misbah, considering its chain of narration as authentic.

بِسْمِ الله وَبِالله وَمِنَ الله وإِلى الله وَفي سَبيلِ الله وَعلى مِلَّةِ رَسولِ الله صلى‌الله‌عليه‌وآله.
اللّهُمَّ إلَيْكَ أسْلَمْتُ نَفْسي وَإلَيْكَ وَجَّهْتُ [٣] وَجْهي وَإلَيْكَ ألْجأتُ ظَهْري وَإلَيْكَ فَوَّضْتُ أمْري ، اللّهُمَّ احْفَظْني بِحِفْظِ الايمانِ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيَّ وَمِنْ خَلْفِي وَعَنْ يَميني وَعَنْ شِمالي وَمِنْ فَوْقي وَمِنْ تَحْتي وما قِبَلي وَادْفَعْ عَنّي بِحَوْلِكَ وَقُوَّتِكَ فَإنَّهُ لاحَوْلَ وَلاقوَّةَ إِلاّ بِكَ.
“In the name of Allah, by Allah, from Allah, towards Allah, in the path of Allah, and upon the religion of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family). O Allah! I have surrendered myself to You, sought refuge with You, directed myself toward You, and entrusted my affairs to You. O Allah, guard me with the protection of faith from before me, behind me, to my right, to my left, from above, from below, and from all sides. Repel harm from me through Your strength and power, for there is no strength or power except with You.”

Sheikh Abbas Qomi included this amulet in Mafatih al-Jinan. In al-Kafi, Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) narrates that his father, Imam Zain al-Abidin, would recite this amulet, and it got rid of the fear of the attacks of humans and jinn from him.

يَا دَيَّانُ غَيْرَ مُتَوَانٍ يَا أَرْحَمَ اَلرَّاحِمِينَ اِجْعَلْ لِشِيعَتِي مِنَ اَلنَّارِ وِقَاءً وَ عِنْدَكَ رِضًى وَ اِغْفِرْ ذُنُوبَهُمْ وَ يَسِّرْ أُمُورَهُمْ وَ اِقْضِ دُيُونَهُمْ وَ اُسْتُرْ عَوْرَاتِهِمْ وَ هَبْ لَهُمُ اَلْكَبَائِرَ اَلَّتِي بَيْنَكَ وَ بَيْنَهُمْ يَا مَنْ لاَ يَخَافُ اَلضَّيْمَ وَ لا تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَ لا نَوْمٌ اِجْعَلْ لِي مِنْ كُلِّ غُمَّ فَرَجاً وَ مَخْرَجاً انک علی کل شئ قدیر.
“O Judge who never delays, O Most Merciful of the merciful! Protect my followers from the Fire, grant them Your satisfaction, forgive their sins, ease their affairs, settle their debts, conceal their flaws, and overlook their major sins that are between them and You. O One who fears no injustice, whom neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes, relieve all my sorrows and grant me a way out. You indeed have power over all things.”

Sheikh Saduq narrated this amulet in Uyoon Akhbar al-Ridha and Kamal al-Din, while Tabrasi included it in A’lam al-Wara and Rawandi in Qisas al-Anbiya. Allamah Majlisi also mentioned it in Bihar al-Anwar. But the most important source is Muhaj al-Da’awat by Sayyid Ibn Tawus, who cited it as The Last Amulet of Imam al-Baqir (a.s.).

يَا خَالِقَ الْخَلْقِ وَ يَا بَاسِطَ الرِّزْقِ وَ يَا فَالِقَ الْحَبِّ وَ يَا بَارِئَ النَّسَمِ وَ مُحْيِيَ الْمَوْتَى وَ مُمِيتَ الْأَحْيَاءِ وَ دَائِمَ الثَّبَاتِ وَ مُخْرِجَ النَّبَاتِ افْعَلْ بِي مَا أَنْتَ أَهْلُهُ وَ لَا تَفْعَلْ بِي مَا أَنَا أَهْلُهُ وَ أَنْتَ أَهْلُ التَّقْوى وَ أَهْلُ الْمَغْفِرَة.
“O Creator of creation, O Provider of sustenance, O Splitter of seeds, O Maker of souls, O Reviver of the dead and the Giver of death to the living, O Eternal, O Bringer of forth the plants! Treat me as You see fit, not according to what I deserve, for You are the One who upholds piety and forgiveness.”

اللهم بك اساور وبك احاول وبك احاور وبك أصول وبك أموت وبك أحيا أسلمت نفسي إليك ، وفوضت أمري إليك لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله العلي العظيم اللهم إنك خلقتني ورزقتني وسترتني ، وعن العباد بلطف ما خولتني أغنيتني ، إذا هويت رددتني ، وإذا عثرت قويتني ، وإذا مرضت شفيتني ، وإذا دعوت أجبتني يا سيدي ارض عني فقد أرضيتني.
“O Allah, with Your aid, I attack; with Your support, I seek a way out; with Your help, I strive; and by You, I live and die. I have surrendered my soul to You and entrusted my affairs to You; there is no power or strength except by Allah, the Exalted, the Great.
O Allah, You created me, sustained me, and covered my faults. Through Your kindness, You enriched me among Your servants. When I stumbled, You steadied me; when I became ill, You healed me; and when I called upon You, You answered me.
O my Master! Be pleased with me, for You have satisfied me.

This protective prayer is cited by Allama Majlisi in Bihar al-Anwar, and Sheikh Saduq mentioned it in Uyoun Akhbar al-Ridha (AS) through Fazl ibn Rabi. Fazl narrates that once, when Harun summoned him in anger with a sword in hand, he warned that if he did not bring his cousin Musa ibn Ja’far (AS), he would kill him. Frightened, Fazl went to Imam al-Kadhim (AS) and conveyed Harun’s message. The Imam followed him, and as he arrived, Harun, initially enraged, embraced the Imam like a distressed mother. He even offered him gifts.
When asked how he was saved from Harun’s wrath, the Imam said he had recited this prayer. It is the prayer of his grandfather, Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS), which he would recite for protection in battles. It is a prayer of security against calamities.

یَامَن لَا شَبیهَ لَه وَ لَا مِثَالَ، أنتَ الله لَا اله الاّ انتَ و لَا خَالقَ إلاّ أنتَ، تُفنِی المَخلُوقِینَ وَ تَبقِی أنتَ حَلُمتَ عَمَّن عَصَاکَ وَ فِی المَغفِرَةِ رِضَاکَ.
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful. O One with no likeness or resemblance, You are Allah; there is no god but You and no creator besides You. You destroy creation, yet You alone remain. You forgave those who disobeyed, and forgiveness rests in Your pleasure.

O Mighty in His might, the most mighty; O Mighty One, make me mighty through Your might, support me with Your victory, shield me from Satanic whispers, defend me with Your protection, guard me through Your craft, and make me among Your best creations. O Unique, O Sole, O Eternal, O Independent.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ يَا مَالِكَ الرِّقَابِ وَ يَا هَازِمَ الْأَحْزَابِ يَا مُفَتِّحَ الْأَبْوَابِ يَا مُسَبِّبَ الْأَسْبَابِ سَبِّبْ لَنَا سَبَباً لَا نَسْتَطِيعُ لَهُ طَلَباً بِحَقِّ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ عَلَى آلِهِ أَجْمَعِين.
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful. O Possessor of authority, O Vanquisher of the enemies, O Opener of doors, O Provider of means! Create a means for us beyond our reach, in the name of “There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is Allah’s Messenger, peace be upon him and his pure family.”

Obtaining and Using Protective Prayers of the Fourteen Infallibles
For authenticity, these prayers are ideally inscribed on deerskin with saffron and rosewater, as recommended by the Imams. When writing, it is preferred for the scribe to have ablution, face the qibla, maintain purity of intention, and be a person of faith and good character. Carrying the prayer keeps one protected; specific ones may be worn as an armband or necklace based on instructions from the Imams.
The most suitable method for preparing the amulet of the Fourteen Infallibles (AS) is to write it on deerskin using rosewater and saffron.
This is because, regarding many amulets, the Imams (AS) emphasized that they should be written on deerskin.
Thus, writing the amulet on deerskin is closer to caution.
On the other hand, writing the amulet with spiritual ink, namely rosewater, saffron, and soil, is necessary both in terms of the recommendations of the Imams (AS) and its effectiveness.
When writing, it is important to be in a state of ritual purity (wudu), face the qibla, have a pure intention, and for the writer to be a pious and practicing person; these are among the etiquettes and conditions for writing the amulet.
Method of preservation: What is important is that the amulet be kept with the person so they can benefit from its effects and blessings.
However, for some amulets, there are specific recommendations from the Imams indicating that they should be used as armbands or necklaces. Since the amulet of the Fourteen Infallibles (AS) is a complete collection of the amulets of the Imams, for which no specific recommendations regarding its preservation have been mentioned, it is important for the owner of the amulet to keep it with them.
